Asset Management Support for a Brand-New Offshore Wind Farm, Transitioning into Operations

The Challenge

Our client, an infrastructure fund manager with a lean asset management team, was balancing navigating a complex and important phase of their Offshore Windfarm’s lifecycle (the transition from construction to operations), while managing several other high-value priorities across their portfolio.

The client decided to outsource the day-to-day management of this investment to ensure that the asset received the attention it required from dedicated specialists, while retaining core decision making in-house, in line with their governance framework within the fund.

Who Did What

Following an extensive onboarding process, we relieved our client of day-to-day asset management tasks including performance monitoring, reporting, debt & lender management, attending project meetings, managing the audited accounts process, supporting the JV budget process, and valuation model updates. This support was delivered through our Jupiter asset management package, providing embedded expertise, a structured governance framework, and proven systems designed to protect value and maintain control.

To ensure the client was prepared for board meetings, fully briefed and ready to make decisions, we prepared detailed recommendations and outlines of key issues, shared with the client via our carefully curated Quarterly Briefing Memos, in addition to the more regular monthly reporting and weekly update calls.

Key Takeaways

By outsourcing the core asset management scope to NIA, while retaining key decision making in-house, the client was able to maintain control of the asset, while freeing up their in-house resources to focus on broader portfolio issues, rather than getting stuck in the weeds of workstreams on this complex and rapidly developing asset.

Our work has allowed the client to maintain a lean internal team, despite rising workloads and demands on the asset management team. The client’s team are now able to focus on the strategic topics which generate the most value, rather than feeling as though they are running from one fire to another across their portfolio.

By partnering with NIA, the client immediately gained access to battle hardened systems and processes, run by a seasoned team of renewables asset management specialists. The transition to operations is now nearing completion and the asset has started distributing returns to investors, as planned.

Our engagement has now been extended another term, indicating the client’s trust in Neptune to deliver value.
